Hunter Johnson from John Jay College, CUNY adopts OpenStax course CalculusI
Tell us why you chose to adopt open resources, what did you use before?
I’ve been annoyed for years that students were being charged $150 per semester for knowledge that was basically in the public domain. Before the OER push at my campus, however, I hadn’t invested a lot of effort into finding high quality OER materials. The systematic encouragement toward OER helped a lot.
What happened then? How long did it take to switch over?
In my Calculus I class the company OpenStax has been very useful. When I saw their materials I knew that we could easily move on from our expensive textbook. A significant percentage of my department feels similarly.
What was the results?
From students? I believe that they are reading more. I don’t have data but I believe that the percentage of students purchasing the expensive texts were very low.
