Amber Gilewski from Tompkins Cortland Community College adopts Introduction to Psychology
TELL US WHY YOU CHOSE TO ADOPT OPEN RESOURCES, WHAT DID YOU USE BEFORE?
I adopted because I was part of a grant-funded OER project in 2011 to help reduce textbook costs to students and increase student success and retention. Every semester I would have students who were unable to afford textbooks and it hindered their ability to participate fully in the class and with the course material. This seemed like a way to bridge that gap.
WHAT HAPPENED THEN? HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO SWITCH OVER?
I saw an increase from 50% of my students passing with a C or better (prior to using OER) to 70% of my students passing with a C or better after implemention of OER.
WHAT WAS THE REACTION?
I think my students were pleased with the switch and it created greater engagement with the material due to the interactive nature of the OER I had students use. One student described it as having a professor in his dorm room with him since the platform provides targeted feedback to students’ practice activity attempts.
